The Covid-19 pandemic is serious. I follow the US Centers for Disease Control and local and state data regarding reports of increasing cases. In Solano County, information can be found at: http://www.solanocounty.com/depts/ph/coronavirus.asp
I understand Covid-19 has parents frantically searching for school alternatives given their different work situations and family circumstances. However, our Vacaville Unified School District is doing it's best to provide continued learning opportunites for our students which includes distance learning. Although this might not be ideal for students and families, I believe our community's health and safety is a priority. When the pandemic has proven to be under control, we can return to in-person instruction. However, for now, I believe we must adhere to what our health experts advise.
With nearly 13,000 students in Vacaville VUSD has many programs throughout the 17 schools that are truly amazing and help assist in the learning process and development of the students academically and socially. Examples include the Vacaville Early College High School program, the Spanish Immersion Cultural Education (SPICE), Gifted And Talented Education (GATE) and the Alternative Cooperative Education (ACE).
Free and reduced meals is also a crucial service the District provides.
Ethnic diversity has also increased in our schools which I believe is important so that students learn from people with various backgrounds.
I have also viewed data showing there have been reduced suspension rates and reduced violence which shows how much our Board and Staff have been prioritizing restorative justice principles and providing mental health support for our students.
